Messages: configuring
This page covers how to configure message storage and forwarding.
For the concepts and day-to-day use, see Messages: overview.
Date-based file names
To prevent message files from getting too large, you can create a new one every year (or every month, or every day...).
The ODB key /Logger/Message file date format specifies a date-based suffix to be used when creating the log files. Any format specifiers recognised by strftime may be used.
| Format | New file created | Example filename for the midas facility |
|---|---|---|
| (empty) | Once | midas.log |
%Y |
Every year | midas_2026.log |
%y%m%d |
Every day | midas_260227.log |
Note that the _ is automatically included if you specify a non-empty format.
Forwarding messages to Discord/Slack/Mattermost
The mmessenger program can forward midas messages to a Discord/Slack/Mattermost channel using webhooks provided by each service.
Requirements
- The midas python libraries must be available.
- The python
requestslibrary must be installed (e.g.pip install requests --user)
Running the program will create ODB entries in:
/Messenger/Discord/WebHooks/Messenger/Slack/WebHooks/Messenger/Mattermost/WebHooks
Within each of these are 7 string keys: MT_ERROR, MT_INFO, MT_DEBUG, MT_USER, MT_LOG, MT_TALK, MT_CALL.
Simply paste in a webhook link in the categories you want to be forwarded. By default each entry is blank, meaning no action is taken.
You must restart mmessenger whenever you change which webhooks are being used.
The message types have been separated so that users can direct different message types to different channels. Alternatively users can also direct everything to the same place by using the same webhook URL multiple times.
